Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 31, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how BookPassage collects, uses, stores, discloses, and otherwise processes information when you use the BookPassage mobile app, landing page, and related services. This policy is intended to function as our general privacy policy and, where applicable, our California notice at collection and privacy disclosure.
Notice at Collection
At or before the time of collection, we may collect identifiers such as your email address and account ID, account records, book and passage content you submit, images you upload for OCR, analytics and usage data, device and network information, subscription status, and support communications.
We collect this information to provide and secure the service, authenticate users, process passages and images, manage subscriptions, improve the product, measure usage, respond to support requests, and comply with legal obligations. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Categories of Information We Collect
The categories of personal information we may collect include identifiers such as email address, user ID, and account credentials managed through our authentication provider; customer records such as subscription status and account settings; commercial information such as subscription or entitlement state; internet or electronic network activity such as clicks, page views, feature usage, diagnostic events, and other product analytics; user content such as saved books, saved passages, reflections, discussion topics, group messages, edits, and support messages; and image or document data you submit for text extraction.
We may also collect device, log, and approximate technical information such as IP-derived region, device type, operating system, app version, timestamps, and request metadata needed to operate, secure, debug, and improve the service.
Sources of Information
We collect information directly from you when you create an account, save passages, upload images, edit text, contact support, or use the app and website.
We also collect information automatically from your device and browser or app session, and we may receive information from service providers and integration partners that help us run the service, such as authentication, hosting, analytics, book metadata, text extraction, and subscription infrastructure providers.
How We Use Information
We use personal information to create and manage accounts, authenticate users, store and display your library and passages, process images and extract marked text, support reading groups and discussions, manage subscription state, process support requests, monitor performance, investigate abuse, and improve the service.
We also use analytics and event data to understand feature usage, diagnose issues, measure engagement, and inform product decisions. At launch, this may include product analytics collected through PostHog or a similar analytics provider.
Third Parties and Service Providers
We use service providers to operate BookPassage. These may include Supabase for authentication and data storage, PostHog for product analytics, Google or similar providers for OCR-related processing, Open Library and Google Books for book metadata, and RevenueCat and platform app stores for subscription management and billing support.
We disclose information to these providers only as reasonably necessary for them to perform services on our behalf, and not for cross-context behavioral advertising on our behalf.
Sales, Sharing, and Sensitive Personal Information
BookPassage does not sell personal information for money. BookPassage also does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those concepts are used in California privacy law.
We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that would require us to offer a separate right to limit under California law, based on the product features we operate today.
Data Retention
We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the service, maintain your account, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, enforce our agreements, and support legitimate backup, audit, and security functions.
Account information is generally retained while your account remains active. Saved passages, books, uploaded page images or OCR inputs, and related analysis are retained until deleted by you or until your account is deleted, subject to limited retention in backups, logs, and records required for security, legal compliance, or dispute resolution. Analytics and log data may be retained for a shorter period based on operational need.
Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to personal information we hold about you, request correction of inaccurate information, request deletion of personal information, request information about categories of personal information collected, disclosed, or processed, and receive equal service and pricing even if you exercise privacy rights.
California residents may also have the right to know whether we sell or share personal information, to opt out of sale or sharing, and to limit certain uses of sensitive personal information where applicable. As described above, BookPassage does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
How to Exercise Rights
You can delete your account directly in the Profile tab of the app. You may also submit privacy requests, including access, correction, and deletion requests, by emailing support@bookpassage.app.
To protect user privacy and security, we may need to verify your identity before fulfilling a request. Verification may include confirming your control of the email address associated with your account or asking for additional information reasonably necessary to verify the request. Authorized agents may submit requests on behalf of California residents where allowed by law, subject to appropriate verification and proof of authority.
Analytics
We may use analytics tools such as PostHog to understand user behavior, feature adoption, app reliability, and service performance. This can include events such as clicks, page or screen views, navigation patterns, and feature interactions.
We use this analytics data for internal product and operational purposes, not for cross-context behavioral advertising. If our analytics practices materially change, we will update this Privacy Policy.
Children's Privacy
BookPassage is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
International Transfers
Your information may be processed and stored in countries other than the one where you live. By using BookPassage, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in jurisdictions that may have different data protection rules than those in your home jurisdiction.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will post the revised policy here, update the last updated date above, and take any additional steps required by applicable law.
